I spotted this statue of an artist holding a paintbrush just round the back of the Tate Modern Switch House extension, near the Neo buildings.
The inscription on the plinth apparently translates as ‘Do not applaud, just throw money’
A little browsing and I discovered that it was created by Greyworld, an artist collective who specialise in public art, usually in urban spaces, and that the title of the work is
Monument to the Unknown Artist (2007).
It was designed as an animatronic sculpture. Hidden cameras detected the movement of viewers which were then mimicked by the statue. There was no evidence of that, alas, last Sunday.
