In Wordsworth’s Footsteps

There’s no way of avoiding William Wordsworth in the Lake District. He was born in 1770 in Cockermouth to the north west of the area, went to school in Hawkshead between 1778 and 1787

As the family got bigger and Wordsworth became more prosperous, they moved out living in a few other houses in the vicinity, including Allen Bank (now owned by the National Trust)on the other side of the village, up towards Helm Crag, finally ending up at Rydal Mount just down the valley towards Ambleside where he lived from 1813 to his death in 1850.

    • The Grammar school was my favourite, but the other two are certainly worth a visit even if you’re not a fan of Wordsworth. Dove Cottage, in particular, gives a flavour of life in the early 19th Century.
